Endosseous dental implants are becoming a common treatment option in the practice of dentistry and have shown great promise for being able to restore dental function and esthetics. Spontaneous exposure of endosseous dental implants is a complication that can be indicative of later implant failure, but few definitive studies have been conducted concerning this histological phenomenon. In this study, literature review of relevant clinical and laboratory studies, along with clinical observations, were conducted to determine the histopathological factors associated with the spontaneous exposure, and subsequent failure, of endosseous dental implant systems during phase I (implant phase) of treatment. Fifteen peer-reviewed studies (1997-2001) of endosseous dental implant complications and failure, published over a five-year period, were reviewed. Clinical observations (N=95) of maxillary and mandibular (edentulous and partial dentition) surgical placement of single-unit, endosseous dental implants were conducted over a three-month period, to gain further knowledge of treatment procedures. All patients were in good health, and no control group was used. The studies were initially categorized by ascending chronology to evaluate the development of a definitive etiology. The studies were then classified as comprehensive or specialized, and evaluated. Initial results indicated that several factors involving the technique-sensitive surgical procedure contribute to the primary, soft tissue, inflammation response of spontaneous dental implant exposure. It was also noted that no definitive, uniform protocol exists for diagnosing this complication. T. ANTHONY TERRY TTERRY@CAPITAL.EDU, (NANCY SWAILS NSWAILS@CAPITAL.EDU), CAPITAL UNIVERSITY, BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES DEPT, 2199 E MAIN ST, COLUMBUS OH 43209-2394
Dental implants are setting the stage for expanded treatment options. Experts who watch the implant market say it is poised for major growth, expected to double in the next ten years. Dental assistants will find that the ability to assist both the dentist and the patient a rewarding experience. Dental implants as an area of expertise will lead you to challenge your clinical skills as well as broaden your responsibilities in the practice by becoming an implant coordinator. An implant coordinator is utilized within a periodontal setting as well as the restorative practice. Together you and your dental assisting colleagues play a maior role in how smoothly a patient proceeds through the process.
For decades, dental implants have offered an alternative to dentures and dental bridges, giving people replacement teeth that look natural. But placing the implants can be a complicated, expensive, and lengthy process of trial and error for dentists. Julian Osorio, a Boston prosthodontist who founded Atlantis Components in 1996, is the creator of a process that makes implants available to mainstream dentistry. For the process, Osorio uses a digital duplication technology that makes it possible to take output from 3-D scanners and then digitally duplicate the shape, textures, and color of real teeth. The duplication technology is called Geomagic Studio from Raindrop Geomagic of Morrisville, N.C. Models created with the technology can be output directly into CAD software or to computer-numerically controlled manufacturing systems. Or, they can be automatically transformed to highly detailed but very small models that can be displayed on the web. The cast allows Atlantis employees to make sure their implants will fit the patients mouth perfectly. They can test for fit within the digitally duplicated mouth, before creating the implant.

FOR THE uninitiated, medical and health insurance is a relatively new class of insurance in Malaysia compared to motor, fire or personal accident insurance. A lot has been written about it, but there continues to be confusion over what health insurance really is.
“There are [more than] 30 million Americans who have no health insurance and another 20 million who have inadequate health insurance,” says Rep. Louis Stokes (D0Ohio), chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus Health Brain Trust. “It is mandatory that we begin to try and give Americans–particularly minorities–adequate health care as a right.” The Bush plan would give people not covered by Medicaid tax credits, and families making less than $80,000 a year tax deductions to pay for medical costs. He would also pass laws to ensure that even chronically ill patients could receive health insurance. The plan has received a cool reception on Capitol Hill, and alternate proposals, including a full-scale, government-paid national health insurance plan, are under development. But what does America really want for its health care system? The views are many.

Freight transport saw the volume of road freight transport drop in the third quarter of 2006 after three years of its robust growth. The volume of rail freight transport picked up by 4.2% in Q3, year on year, while the volume of road freight transport fell by 4.3%. International transport performed by freight vehicles registered in Slovenia decreased by just 0.8%, whereas transport within the country recorded a stronger drop of 16.1%. This was the first year-on-year quarterly fall of road freight transport since Q2 of 2003. Q3 of 2006 also witnessed a 10.2% fall in the volume of maritime freight transport. This activity registered the second consecutive year-on-year quarterly decrease, whereas in 2005 it still enjoyed robust growth (41.7%), driven by the boom in the industry. Harbour freight transport surged by 27.6% in Q3 and also recorded a high nine-month year-on-year increase (24.6%). Over the last five years, road freight transport surged by more than 50%, which was almost entirely due to the increase in international transport. In Q3 of 2006 over Q3 of 2001, road freight transport picked up by 56.5% or 1,003 million tonne kilometres (tkm). The shipment of goods out of or into Slovenia rose by 49.1% or 534 million tkm, whereas transport abroad and cabotage (the shipment of goods within another country) shot up 4.3-fold, i.e. by 450 million tkm. Meanwhile, national road freight transport increased by a modest 3.5%, or 19 million tkm. Within the EU, Slovenia is one of the few countries that perform the highest number of per capita road shipments (measured in tkm). The favourable transit position and the countrys smallness (a high share of international trade) underpin Slovenias high proportion of international transport, whose growth has been additionally boosted by the process of Slovenias integration in the EU. The last administrative barriers to carrying out freight transport abroad were removed as Slovenia became a full EU member, which led to the boom in activity seen in recent years.
Looking at freight transport, there was a significant increase in maritime and railway transport, while the volume of road transport remained roughly at the level from last years second quarter. After the volume of maritime transport fell by a fifth in the first quarter, it rose by 14.5% in the second quarter of 2007, year on year. The volume of transport has become more volatile in recent years, but the volume of goods carried has not contracted significantly relative to the global conjuncture witnessed in the industry in 2005. Maritime transport is one of the minor transport modes in Slovenia. Railway freight transport grew by 14.9% in the first quarter and continued to grow strongly in the second quarter. Harbour transport recorded a modest increase, while road freight transport did not increase in year-on-year terms in the second quarter, partly because of the very high volume of road transport seen in the second quarter of 2006. Data also show that the expansion in this mode of transport, boosted by the abolition of restrictions upon Slovenias accession to the EU, has moderated somewhat this year Slovenia is near the top among EU countries according to the volume of road freight transport per capita. The assessment refers to the volume of freight transport expressed in tonne kilometres, undertaken by freight vehicles registered in a given country. It measures carriage by domestic freight vehicles in the country of registration and abroad, and not the volume of transport within the territory of a given country. In 2006 by far the most per capita road shipments were performed by carriers registered in Luxembourg (18,766 tkm; see graph). Slovenian carriers (with three times lower freight transport per capita) were ranked second and performed 58.9% more transport than the average carrier in the EU. The high intensity of road freight transport in Slovenia is the result of the surging growth rates of road transport, particularly in 2004 and 2005 (27.9% and 22.5%). From the second quarter of 2004 to the second quarter of 2007, the volume of shipments carried by freight vehicles registered in Slovenia increased by 53.8%. Domestic transport rose by 23.9%, while international transport climbed by as much as 63.8%. Within international transport, the largest (3.2-fold) increase was recorded in cross-trade transport and cabotage (transport performed in another country). The well-developed shipping industry in Slovenia is attributable to Slovenias favourable position at the crossing of European corridors V and X. Transport on these corridors is increasing, and Slovenian carriers are exploiting new business opportunities. With Slovenias entry into the EU, a number of administrative barriers for carriage within the EU were removed for Slovenian carriers (especially the procurement of a limited number of licences). Slovenia also negotiated the possibility to perform cabotage in the EU-15 countries, which the Eastern European countries that joined the EU together with Slovenia will only be allowed to do after the end of a five-year period.

With little new development, architects are finding themselves busy with government and institutional contracts, storefronts, tenant consolidations and lobby renovations. Additionally, they say, their world is becoming more computerized and hand drafting is headed for extinction. For instance, Moudis said, a law firm may want to get 20 percent more out of an existing 40,000-square-foot space. They may take a 400-square-foot office and make two offices or take the 250-square- foot to 300-square-foot offices and get two 120 square-foot to 150- square-foot offices. “The frills are gone,” Moudis said. “They are spending the money smartly.” In most cases, he explained, the installations are not as extravagant. “You can show wood-trim base and molding but dont have to do wood floor to ceiling,” he added.

Health is a measure of quality of life that is difficult to define and measure. In the 1940s, the World Health Organization (WHO) defined health as a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. At the first International Conference on Health Promotion in Ottawa, Canada (1986), the Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion built on the WHOs concept and further defined health as a resource for everyday life. a positive concept emphasizing social and personal resources, as well as physical capabilities. Good health enables one to function independently within a changing environment.

But of course I jumped at the chance. After all, one leaves ones car, with its inexplicable engine chatter, one headlight malfunctioning, and a brake problem, in the corner garage for the mechanics to fuss over, and a day or so later it emerges in fine working order. Why not such a transformation in my golf game? The main problem with my game is what I carry in my mind during the process of hitting a ball. I have been told great golfers have an image of where the ball is going to land . . . a distant green, a spot on the fairway favorable for an approach to the green, a knoll on the other side of a pond, and so on. On the putting surface, the track of the ball to the hole is in their minds eye as exact as the lines on a graph. I have tried this, of course. What is quite visible in my minds eye when I get ready to hit the shot is the flag on the green, not the base of an equipment shed wall where my ball ends up. My main problems in imaging are bedeviling mental quirks . . . that a bug, for example, or a bumblebee is suddenly, like an apparition, going to materialize on the ball just as I start my downswing.

The joys of flying on your birthday have been much discussed in this column: cakes, champagne and even upgrades can be laid on for the celebrant. But Kate Thorman of Oxford found that becoming 12 provided her with a Catch-22 problem. “So, on the one hand Kate is old enough to pay the adult fare, but on the other hand she is too young to travel without a paid escort,” says her exasperated father. At this point, Mr Thorman gave up and booked with another airline; then poor Kate found her birthday flight delayed by four hours at Birmingham airport. “Come back, Gorbachev, all is forgiven,” pleads Philip Robinson of Sheffield. “The last time I visited my friend in Minsk, this city was in the USSR. I flew to Moscow, took a train to Minsk, and all was well.”
THE FINAL vacation days of summer are rapidly approaching. Traveling with pets can be great fun, but if your dog or cat hates to travel, the trip could be your worst nightmare, and hers, too. What arrangements do you need to make? Some dogs and cats do perfectly well in a boarding facility, while others do better when they stay in their own home. For a pet who will stay at home, a reliable friend or family member who can sleep over in your home is best for a dog. A cat will be OK alone for a short time with someone regularly visiting to give her food, water and some human companionship. If you dont have a friend or family member who can come do this for you, numerous bonded and insured pet sitting services are available.

LYON, France — Reportlinker.com announces that a new market research report related to the Worldwide home improvement industry is now available to its catalogue. This report analyzes the worldwide markets for Laminate Flooring in Million Square Meters. The major End use segments analyzed are New Residential Construction, Residential Replacement (Including DIY Inst.), and Commercial Sector.
Of course, the ultimate judge and jury of a products worth in this great free-enterprise nation of ours are consumers. This year, U.S. consumers are expected to spend between $80 million and $100 million on laminate flooring, which translates to about 1 percent of the U.S. residential flooring industry. That may not sound like much, but as E.C. Bill Dearing, president of the North American Laminate Flooring Assn., pointed out, If you consider that four years ago the category share was really nothing and as little as a year and a half ago it was not measurable, this is a highly significant achievement.Dearing, who is also manager of new product development for Perstorp Flooring, was among the presenters at the Second Essentials of Laminate Flooring technical seminar sponsored by NALFA, the Laminating Materials Assn. and Wood Wood Products. The program, held Sept. 15 in Chicago, brought together some 100 interested manufacturers and suppliers for what Dearing referred to as the most dramatic consumer product I have ever had anything to do with.Dearing, who said he sees laminate flooring competing more against vinyl flooring than hardwood floors, said he thinks achieving 5 percent market share by 2000 is doable. I have never seen anything grow this fast, he said.

The Capital Goods industry has three sub industries: electrical equipment, heavy equipment and machinery manufacturers. The three capital goods market segments have similar valuations even though their end products are different Another factor effecting the valuation of heavy equipment and capital goods companies is interest cost The current rate of interest is favorable for this group. Also, long term interest rates are relativly low which makes it easier for corporations and farmers to finance heavy equipment expenditures. Companies, in the heavy equipment industry, that obtain a significant amount of their sales in foreign markets usually have a higher growth rate and therefore a higher valuation. The reason is, there is a worldwide built up demand for infrastructure improvements. Therefore companies doing business in the international market have a good source for long term profits.
Savvy employers are constantly looking for ways to enhance the work environment while cutting costs. Caterpillar Inc., Peoria, IL, now offers such service to heavy equipment operations. For their model 905, 966 and 980 front end loaders, they have started using the Baydur STR/F651 reinforced structural foam polyurethane RIM system to form HVAC enclosures. Tipping the scales at 9 lbs, the HVAC enclosure consists of two separately-molded pieces that are 19-in, deep by 24-in, long. Wall thickness is a consistent 1/2-in., with the exception of a slightly thicker area where the lunch tray is bolted on. Both front and back pieces are molded by PLA-MA USA, Owosso, MI. For the front piece, the company first sprays the mold with a release agent, then places the vinyl exterior skin into the mold and clamps it into place. After a vacuum pulls the vinyl into the mold cavity, an operator hand-tucks the vinyl into the molds recess. Next, a pre-cut fiberglass mat is laid over the vinyl and secured. The Polyurethane is injected and the mold is closed for 10 minutes. Both pieces are water-trimmed, bonded together with adhesive and then sent to Caterpillar where accessories are installed.

Exercise and Cancers: Research Opportunities for Health-Related Fitness ScientistsRepresentatives from the American Cancer Society (ACS), the National Cancer Institute (NCI), and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) will challenge AAHPERD members to contribute to cancer prevention and control, describing the most promising research opportunities and resources to support investigation of the relationships between cancers and exercise. The presentation will be based on a synoptic article being developed by the ACS and the Office for Health Promotion of Northern Illinois University. Ruth Corcoran of ACS will describe a proposed collaborative research agenda, suggesting that two sets of consensually developed guidelines are needed to promote such research: one set to facilitate dissemination of what experts already know to the public and providers (including exercise specialists); and a second set to facilitate further collaborative research. Speakers from CDC and NCI will outline what is known about these topics, and how exercise scientists can contribute to further development (see accompanying abstracts). Presenters will recommend a process to develop research priorities, involving cancer experts, public health scientists, and relevant interest groups in AAHPERD. In the final quarter of 2007, passenger transport saw the largest increase in air transport and the largest decline in city bus transport. Within land passenger transport, the declining trend of bus transport continued. The annual decline in the number of passengers in intercity and city bus transport (-3.9% and -3.5%, respectively) was also similar to the average annual decrease in the last three years (5.9% and 3.3%, respectively). The volume of railway passenger transport in the final quarter of 2007 did not strengthen significantly year on year; the 2.4% growth recorded in 2007 was also only slightly above the three-year average (2.1%). Air transport and airport transport posted vigorous growth in the final quarter of last year (27.6% and 19.6% year on year, respectively). The increases in 2007 (13.7% and 13.3%, respectively) were also somewhat greater relative to the average annual rises in the last few years. In air transport, this also enabled an increase in aircraft fleet (lease of one and purchase of two new aircrafts) and in airport transport, the completion of the first phase of the new passenger terminal and arrival of two new airline companies, which started to fly regularly from Ljubljanas airport last year. Within freight transport, road transport has increased significantly, whereas maritime freight transport is still decreasing slightly, following the boom recorded in this branch two years before. In the final quarter last year, the volume of freight transport by rail decreased by 3.7% relative to the same quarter of 2006, whereas 2007 as a whole saw a solid 6.8% growth, which exceeded the average growth in the last three years (4.6%). Road freight transport strengthened by as much as 19.1% in the final quarter of 2007; the high 13.4% annual growth nevertheless fell short of the annual average of the last three years by almost 2.p.p. Against the background of favourable international trends, maritime freight transport increased by a respective 30.6% and 41.8% in 2004 and 2005, whereas it dropped by a respective 6.4% and 5.2% in 2006 and 2007. The fall in the volume of maritime transport in the final quarter last year (-8.7%) indicates that the slowdown continues. Harbour freight transport in the final quarter and in 2007 as a whole recorded only a slight increase, particularly compared to the high 22.5% growth in 2006 (average annual growth in the last three years totalled 9.5%). Road freight transport by domestic carriers recorded a much stronger increase than railway freight transport over the last few years, largely due to the increasing international transport (see graph). The volume of road freight transport (in tonne kilometres - tkm), which was almost as much as three times greater than railway transport in 2004, increased by 4,728 million tkm until 2007 (by 52.5%), whereas railway transport increased only by 454 million tkm (by 14.4%). In three years, road freight transport became almost four times greater than railway transport; the share of road transport within freight transport rose to 79.2%. Road transport growth strengthened particularly after Slovenias accession to the EU and mainly through increased international transport (see SEM 1/2008: 14). The largest increase was recorded in cross-trade transport and cabotage, by 2,161 million tkm (by 155.2%). International transport of goods loaded in Slovenia increased by 1,323 million tkm (by 49.4%) and international transport of goods unloaded in Slovenia by 937 million tkm (by 35.1%). National road transport in Slovenia increased by a mere 306 million tkm (by 13.5%).
Freight transport saw a surge in harbour transport and an over 10% increase in road transport. The volume of rail freight transport picked up by 5.4% in the final quarter, year on year, while the volume of road freight transport rose even more, by 9.7%. Although road freight transport declined by a few per cent in Q3, its annual increase in 2006 still reached a high 9.8%, which contributed significantly to the total increase in the transport, storage, and communications sector (road freight transport generates almost a quarter of the value added in this sector). Maritime freight transport fell by 6.4% in 2006 after having surged by 41.7% in 2005 amid the boom in this branch. In the final quarter of 2006, the volume of maritime transport already rose by 4.4%, year on year. Harbour freight transport recorded the biggest increase in Q4, by 17.0%. It also enjoyed the highest annual growth within freight transport (22.5%). Road freight transport has been growing strongly in the past few years, including in 2006, due to the increasing international transport (see the graph). The volume of international road freight transport increased by 12.5% in 2006 while national road freight transport even fell by 3.5%. Within international transport, cross-trade transport and cabotage (transport performed in another country) recorded the highest increase of 16.4%. Measured in tonne kilometres, international transport comprised 81.2% of the total transport of goods by road while national transport totalled 18.8% of the total road freight transport (if the volume of transport is measured solely in tonnes of goods carried and the travelled distances are disregarded, national transport prevails with a 82.5% share). 56.3% of international transport was performed by companies, while slightly over 50% of national transport was carried out by sole entrepreneurs. Own-account transport comprised 3.0% of international transport and 31.1% of national transport (the rest was transport for hire or reward).
TRANSPORTATIONTransportation systems move goods and people around the world. Physical distribution of goods is accomplished by various means: truck, railroad, airplane, ship or boat, and pipeline, or a combination of these methods. Surface and air transportation systems that are widely used to transport people include automobiles, bicycles, rail, air, ship or boat, bus, and rapid-transit systems.Railroads are a low-cost mode of transportation for large quantities of heavy and bulky items. Since rail lines are stationary, other forms of transportation move goods to

North East people are avoiding visiting the dentist because of a phobia, according to a new survey. The survey, sponsored by HealthSure, found that although treatment today is pain-free, one in five people across the country who dont visit the dentist regularly are simply too scared. The survey was conducted by the British Dental Health Foundation.
Another North East dental practice is leaving the NHS to go private. In a letter to patients the dentists said: This decision has not been made lightly.

THE DERBY suburb of Crewton does not exude cheap tat, so the place was understandably surprised to learn yesterday that its houses will fetch less money than any in the land. The average property price in Crewton was just pounds 29,052 last year, according to research by the financial information group Experian, published yesterday. It prompted some typically delicious north-south comparisons as the same research showed that the price of a home in St Johns Wood, north London (pounds 401,303), will buy you 14 Crewton semis. Being cheap is a double-edged sword, if Crewtons response to its new- found fame was anything to go by. For estate agents like Chris Brown of Boxall, Brown and Jones (who recently sold a two-bedroom place for pounds 14,000) it means a pounds 1,000 fixed fee can represent 5 per cent of the sale price, so “generally speaking its good to sell at that price,” he admitted. But Abdelkrim Baka wants to sell his 10-bedroom guest house on London Road and move back to Tunisia. He put it up for sale at pounds 160,000 five years ago. Yesterday he dropped it to pounds 115,000. “I bought it from my brother in 1983,” he said. “I thought he was doing me a favour.” Crewton owes its existence and its demise (prices have fallen almost 15 per cent in three years) to the railways. Rows of immaculate terraces were built for the railway workers at the turn of the century. The stone plaques set in their patterned brickwork read “Park View Villas”, “Rosamund Cottages”, “Bond Villas”. Neither is the local infant school new-build in cheap brick. “Board School, 1890″ reads the engraving on its stone wall - the kind of authenticity buyers in the south east will kill for. But authenticity means less when the British Railways Technical Centre (which made trains and wagons for BR) has closed down and hundreds of jobs have gone. Its a far cry from St Johns Wood, where prices have climbed 13.5 per cent in three years. Even that pales by comparison with Virginia Water, Surrey, where a 92.2 per cent climb between 1995 and 1998 took the average property price to pounds 268,409 last year. Other than Virginia Water and Richmond, each of the top 20 most expensive locations are in London. The 20 cheapest areas are in Yorkshire, Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Lincolnshire, Merseyside, Staffordshire and Durham. It all looks extremely gloomy for the north but in fact it is not. It is in the souths sensational climb that the bad signs lie, according to Experian. If nothing else, the figures show there is good value to be found in places like Crewton, while the souths extraordinary growth proves the spectre of negative equity is now looming. “We would be staggered to see this kind of growth continue without severe inflationary pressures,” said Bruno Rost of Experian. “There is strong potential for the bottoming out of the market and we dont want to see prices out of control. It is the north that demonstrates the most steady growth. There is huge over-capacity in the south east, with 23 per cent growth on average, while capacity does exist further north.” “Its not all breeze-blocks up here,” said one Crewton resident yesterday. “There are even plans to revive the old canal here and create a marina. Things are never as bad they sound.” Experians figures are based on the recorded price of sales, not the number of transactions. This helps explain why the notoriously pricey areas of Hampstead and Islington in north London (where most sales were relatively cheap flats or maisonettes) do not fare as well as East Sheen and Kilburn. If there is one subject easy to find people to talk to about, you would think it would be retirement. But when researchers recently contacted several hundred people on a list of those considering buying a retirement home, the vast majority of them were either travelling, or busy juggling full schedules. Couples often want to get rid of the large family house, but dont like to think that the next move they make will be the last. They want independence, but with the fall-back of a warden on site in an emergency. In 1982, there were only 2,500 private sheltered units in existence in the UK. Today, that figure stands at 90,000, and since the over-55s account for two-fifths of the countrys wealth, they are proving to be a demanding market. It is no longer possible, as it was in the Eighties, for developers to produce small, box-like homes for the elderly and expect them to sell. Now, the key is space and the more American notion of “service”. All the problems and practicalities of running a home can be passed on to someone else - albeit at a price. Increasingly, the service offered to people buying in the grounds of a nursing home is becoming more popular and widespread. “Close care” is similar to sheltered housing, but with the bonus of nursing care either at home or in the main house. Its greatest appeal is that the elderly stand a good chance of staying in their own homes for the rest of their lives. Gwyneth Hodgson, now 84, moved into her flat in the grounds of Hays House, near Shaftesbury, Dorset, when she began to find the upkeep of her house and garden too much. “I didnt want to be a burden on my son, nor did I want to bother friends. When I cut my leg one day, I pressed a button and a nurse arrived at once. I wanted to stay in the area, and this is the perfect answer. I have my dog with me, which is important because I could never live without an animal, and some places dont allow them.” Many people, unused to living so closely with others, regard the prospect with some trepidation, and Mrs Hodgson admits that she likes being alone. “I look out over fields. If it were practical, I would live in a remote country spot, but this is a fair compromise. Most of us are widows and we dont mix a great deal. But there is a residents restaurant if we do want to have lunch together or entertain.” Mrs Hodgson bought her flat from Park Healthcare on a 125-year lease. The annual service charge is pounds 2,657, but this does not cover nursing care. The company is currently selling its latest development, set in the grounds of Elliscombe House, near Wincanton, Somerset. The unusually spacious eight two-bedroom apartments and two three-bedroom gatehouses are for sale from pounds 169,500 to pounds 189,500, with an additional service charge of pounds 2,800. Service charges are the area most buyers are warned to check out thoroughly. Some offer a minimum of maintenance and warden cover, while others will reflect a ritzy hierarchy of reception staff and services that people may well not use. The cost of running a swimming pool, for instance, may not be justified for an underused facility. In its research, English Courtyard found that buyers felt some developers did not always disclose the full extent of service charge, and worried about the escalation of such costs. Calls to Help the Aged on the subject were an important factor in the charity setting up its own Property Services, a commercial arm of the main campaigning body that was created a year ago. The charity now has 6,000 buyers registered with it, and a nationwide list of retirement homes. Among any group of buyers in this sector, there will always be a “reluctant” proportion - those who will mentally tough it out, even as they become physically more fragile. Godfrey Winterson, of Hamptons International, had to work hard to persuade his mother to give up the struggle of living alone. “After a fourth fall, she started going downhill rapidly. She would not have lasted six months on her own. Now, she goes out at least three times a week and likes to have friends to stay. “The other options we considered were nursing care of pounds 750 a week, or an establishment where she was going to be cared for 24 hours a day at a cost of pounds 3,000 a month. How many years can people afford that?” asks Winterson. A flat with a warden outside a main centre, on the othe hand, could be bought for pounds 60,000, which might leave money over for supply nurses or other forms of care. Even the thought of moving is daunting for some. McCarthy Stone, the largest developer of retirement properties in Britain, finds that a third of its buyers use the part-exchange scheme, often for the convenience of not hav- ing potential buyers traipsing around their homes. The company has also noticed the growing popularity of city-centre locations where everything is on tap. In Bath, it has seen a record number of enquiries for its canalside development. Close care is not easy to find in cities but, for example, the Kensington office of John D Wood has a two-bedroom apartment for sale, for pounds 250,000, at Chartwell House, which has a nursing home attached and is one of a number owned by the Goldsborough Estates, part of Bupa. The service charges start at pounds 117.79 a week. In Richmond, Surrey, meanwhile, Bovis Retirement homes has just completed Fullerton Court, described as “very sheltered living”, where service charges are pounds 4,550 a year. There is some comfort to be taken from the resale values of good retirement properties. English Courtyard says it has beaten the nationwide indices over the past 10 years, and the property has had an annual increase of 5.69 per cent. As the population ages, this is one sector where growth must surely be guaranteed. Home security system maker Interactive Technologies Inc. of North St. Paul, Minn., found a market for its products in Europe. To sell them there, however, mechanical design engineer Jim Kreier needed to package the wallmounted alarm in an attractive shell while providing a strong housing. Interactives first entry into Europe used special boards in heavy steel boxes to “test the waters,” Kreier said. Discovering that consumers there preferred plastic enclosures to steel, Interactive engineers also realized that the European community had not yet standardized on a regulation for home security systems. The company decided to use the stringent mechanical requirements from the IS-199 specification, which called for polycarbonate 1/8 inch thick, Kreier said. The specifications for flame retarding were well defined, Kreier added.

MEMPHIS, Tenn.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–July 19, 1999– ResortQuest International, Inc.
Worthy Rentals is ResortQuests ninth acquisition since its May 1998 IPO and the fifth announced in the past four weeks. The nine companies, aggregating 4,000 total units, represent a 40 percent increase in ResortQuests initial portfolio of vacation rental units. The Hilton Head acquisition–the companys first in South Carolina–is expected to be immediately accretive to 1999 earnings. Incorporated in 1983, Worthy Rentals provides rental property management services primarily in Sea Pines Plantation, one of Hilton Heads most recognized gated resort communities and the site of three world-class golf courses. Hilton Head is an important addition to our portfolio and extends our reach into one of the most desirable resort destinations in the country, said David Sullivan, ResortQuest chairman and CEO. A major golf and beach vacation destination, Hilton Head, S.C. attracts nearly 2 million visitors annually. Our acquisition pipeline remains quite active, and we are aggressively pursuing additional acquisition candidates in other prime vacation markets.

This coating is comprised of a decor paper, protective clear overlay and an additional underlay in certain cases. The proportion of corundum in the overlay determines the degree of surface wear resistance. Alternative products feature a surface made of finish foils with ESH lacquer or veneer with a lacquered surface on the good side.Typically, high-density fiberboard is used as the substrate, although MDF and particleboard are used by some manufacturers.

By the Middle Ages, in Rottweil, Germany, these dogs had been crossed with local sheepdogs to create the Rottweiler Metzgerhund, the Rottweil Butchers Dog. Butchers used these dogs to drive and guard their livestock as it made its way on foot from town to town. In the 19th Century, cattle-driving became illegal in Germany and the Rottweiler suffered a decline in popularity until 1914 when they were once again brought into use for the war, which proved their physical and mental abilities. The breed entered the United States in the 1930s and was accepted into their Kennel Club in 1935, being accepted by the British Kennel Club the following year. They are one of the most powerful and strong dogs in the world for their size.
There are just a few thousand tigers left in the wild, and mountain gorillas are down to a few hundred. With figures like these, its easy to overlook those less exotic animals closer to home that are facing extinction. But, while they might not grab the headlines, the plight of native British livestock breeds such as the bagot goat, the British lop pig, the boreray sheep and even the original Aberdeen angus beef cattle is no less critical. “Until agriculture became established as a semi-scientific business in the late 18th century, there werent any recognisable breeds, just types of animal that had adapted over time to their environment,” explains the RBST chairman and co-founder Lawrence Alderson, who defines an original - or native - breed as one where documentary evidence proves its continued existence over many years and DNA profiling shows that there has been no dilution of the original bloodline by cross-breeding. “Industrial development and artificial selection, however, made certain types of animal flourish and others disappear - not always because they werent economically viable. Sometimes it was just down to changing fashion,” he says.

House Values

November 20th, 2008

The national housing sector has benefited significantly from low long-term interest rates in recent years. The Feds hikes in short-term rates after mid-2004 did little to dampen housing demand. There has been talk of a housing bubble in many areas of the country as home prices have risen considerably compared to historical levels. Prices have also risen much faster than rental rates, analogous to having a high price-earnings ratio for houses. Average national home prices have not dropped since the Great Depression but the recent frenzy in the real estate market has investors wondering if the market can maintain this pace. Housing prices have risen and popped in past years. Texas collapsed in 1986, Southern California in 1989, and Massachusetts and Connecticut in 1991. But the debate continues over whether a nationwide bubble has materialized. Some compare todays coastal housing market, where prices increased the most, to the investment craze that led to the technology stock crash a few years ago. Home prices in some regions have more than doubled in the past five years, leading to concerns that the speculative bubble might burst. There have also been record levels of conversion of apartments into condominiums in many areas of the country as demand for homeownership has also led to increased demand for condominiums. Investors can earn a greater profit by selling apartments as condos rather than renting apartments. In markets like Miami, where the condo market has been particularly hot, some units have even changed hands the same day as speculators have been buying many of the condos. The bad news for homeowners in Indiana is that they have not seen their home values rise like many other areas of the country. The Indianapolis areas home prices grew at nearly the slowest pace of the top fifty markets, or 19 percent during the past five years. Homeowners in the Boston and San Diego areas saw their homes appreciate more than 75 percent during the same period. The good news is what has not gone up will probably not go down. That is, home prices in Indiana are not likely to fall with a possible drop in prices in those areas of the country that may be experiencing a bubble. So there is less risk associated with purchasing a home in Indiana compared to many other areas of the country. This also makes homes in Indiana relatively affordable compared to many other areas.
Affordable housing. Low cost of living. High quality of life. The combination of these three things sets the Fort Wayne housing market apart. Add a wide variety of options into the equation and you have a truly good value for your housing dollars. A recent home price analysis by the National Association of REALTORS(R) revealed that the Fort Wayne housing market is in excellent shape, with a potential for significant housing equity gains, a very favorable home price-to-income ratio and an even better mortgage servicing cost-to-income ratio. The same report shows that the region added an estimated 15,000 new housing units in the past five years, approximately 12,000 of which were single-family dwellings. New developments continue to pop up in suburban areas surrounding the city. Conveniently located medical facilities, schools, libraries, parks, retail stores and restaurants add to the sense of community.

Much maligned as a mousegun, the .380 ACP is generally chambered in rather pedestrian handguns. However, there are two distinctly superior pistols available for the cartridge–the Waither PPK and SIG P-232. Challenged on the upper end of the ballistic power spectrum by the new breed of miniaturized service-caliber pistols and on the low end by the mini .32s, the basic blow-back 9xl7mm– yes, the much maligned .380 ACP– retains a firm hold on its share of the concealable handgun market. While reviewers often report the locked breech mini-guns to be close in size to the Walther PPK, the height and cross sectional girth of these pistols remain significantly larger. You can engineer a short locked breech pistol, but not one that lies as flat as the straight-recoil .380s.
Staff at a wildfowl sanctuary have welcomed the first arrivals of spring. The birth of three black-necked swan cygnets at the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trusts Washington centre heralds the start of the new breeding season. SHORT messaging services is still a major hit among mobile phone users. Celcos are no longer in doubt on the growth potential of SMS. Even third party vendors are now resorting to using various SMS-based transactions and even SMS-based contests, though still controversial.
Switzerland rang in 2005 with a monumental wave of text messages, 70.4 million of them to be exact. The messages sent by SMS (Short Message Service) and MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service) were up a reported 6 per cent over last years figure. According to company spokespeople, the Swisscom, Orange, and Sunrise networks handled the high load placed on the equipment with minimal hitches, thus ensuring that millions of New Years greetings were received right as 2004 expired.
The SMS Forum, a non-profit organization
with a mission to develop, foster and promote SMS (short message service)
to the benefit of the global wireless industry will disband by July 27,
2007, and take down its web site by the end of 2007.

The SMS Forum served as a useful tool for the industry through its
workshops and its liaise with other industry and standards organizations.
Since its inception, the SMS Forum provided operators, solutions providers
and developers with an important platform to exchange ideas and present
solutions to the challenges that the industry faced. This process has been
very effective, and the maturity of SMS means that the need for further
promotion of the standards is now no longer necessary.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: The Internet presents both opportunities and challenges for marketers of healthcare products. An advocate for the medium argues for its increasing value in a comprehensive media mix, offers advice on how to make programs more productive, and cautions on Internet pitfalls. A similar, dramatic increase is occurring in Internet advertising. For all industries, including pharmaceuticals, total 1997 online revenues reached $1 billion. The Internet Advertising Bureau projects this figure rising to $2 billion in 1998, $5 billion in the year 2000, and $9 billion by 2002.
A Saskatchewan-based grain brokerage consulting firm is believed to be the first in Western Canada and perhaps the world to make such extensive use of the Internet to market grain for farmers. CGF Brokerage and Consulting of Saskatoon employs qualified graders who analyze grain samples from farmers and grade those samples based on Canadian Grain Commission standards. This detailed information is posted on the Internet along with digital photos of the bin run grain sample, the cleaned sample and the dockage. (See example shown at right.)

The Education of a Graphic Designer Allworth Press, 2005 $24.95, 355 pages Far from being a resource for design educators only, Hellers book should get the seasoned practitioner, as well as the novice, pondering questions of design theory, problem solving, and what makes a truly well equipped graphic designer. The “How We Learn What We Learn” section includes essays with titles such as “Education in an Adolescent Profession” and “Tear It Down.” “How I Learned What I Learned” offers interviews with such notables as Milton Glaser, and “How We Teach What We Teach” explores views on course syllabi or “what every graphic designer should know.” Todays professional graphic designer is, at various times, an artist, a typographer, a technician, a businessperson, a marketer, an anthropologist, and more. For those considering a career in graphic design, as well as those already working in the field, this book should be a welcome resource.
Green, 32, says his work doesnt have a signature style, but often includes “cartoonish” elements and tongue-in-cheek humor. “People say they can identify a consistent something in my work - theyll say that looks like your stuff - but then they cant quite put their finger on it,” he says. He cites tattoos as an inspiration, which is reflected in the way he uses illustrations as an integrated part of graphics, rather than something that is merely added on. In addition to print, Web projects and packaging, Green is moving into work on environmental graphics - in this case wall murals, as well as logos and signage - for a new bowling alley that is about to open in Jeffersontown. He also designed props and graphics for the locally made feature film Keep Your Distance.

Switzerland rang in 2005 with a monumental wave of text messages, 70.4 million of them to be exact. The messages sent by SMS (Short Message Service) and MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service) were up a reported 6 per cent over last years figure. Due to better mobile phone capabilities, MMS messages appear to be on the rise with 1.78 million sent on New Years. However, SMS messages continue to rule the airways. According to company spokespeople, the Swisscom, Orange, and Sunrise networks handled the high load placed on the equipment with minimal hitches, thus ensuring that millions of New Years greetings were received right as 2004 expired.
Many web designers have been looking for good solutions for sending SMS
messages from web sites. Until now this has been very difficult due
to many different solutions from GSM network providers to access
their SMSC servers. Some providers use XML, others use X.25 and other
specific SMSC protocols: HERMES, UCP, CIMD, and SMPP. This problem
has been a severe obstacle for easy integration of Internet based
services to communicate with GSM phones.

FACE-LIFTS, and surgical procedures to make the face look younger, are nothing new. Medical techniques that have made them a reality are fairly recent, but mythological texts spanning many centuries and many cultures (from ancient India to Hollywood) have imagined what the consequences might be if those who wished for a new face were to get what they wished for. Contemporary accounts of cosmetic surgery differ in many ways from mythological treatments of the theme; where the modern technique constructs a new face ex nihilo, most myths imagine the exchange of one face for another, existing face. Both sets of stories, however, frequently express the desire to have not just any face but ones own face as it once was in the past–to masquerade as ones younger self, as it were. And the myths, at least, demonstrate that this is a foolish, impossible, or even fatal desire. It is my contention that the myths are right, and that the lessons they teach should be taken seriously by people contemplating real, surgical face-lifts. Many myths about face-lifts were conceived by cultures far from the worlds of cosmetic surgery in Europe or the United States. Here is a story from a late medieval Indian Sanskrit text: Parvati is a woman divided against herself–or, rather, a woman forced by her husband to divide herself into two polarized halves. Shiva likens her to a black snake when he teases her, and like a snake she sloughs off her black outer sheath to reveal her golden inner form. The creation of a double is her solution to the problem of Shivas womanizing (more precisely, goddessizing); insulted and rejected, she walks out on her unfaithful, hyper-critical husband. But she does not stay away for long: Eventually she sends back a more acceptable form of herself, the golden goddess. The chopped off, negative Kali is banished to the liminal area of the Vindhya Mountains (the southern region that composers of the ancient Sanskrit texts in the northwest of India regarded as beyond the Hindu pale, the place to dump things that you did not want in the story any more); the remaining golden form becomes the female half of the androgyne. I have discussed elsewhere (Doniger, 2000) the apparently racist aspects of this myth; ancient Indian authors did not have a recognizable concept of race, though they did have negative ideas about people with dark skin, whom they sometimes regarded as lower-class or even out-caste. But we cannot ignore the parallels with the uses of cosmetics in our own day to change characteristics stereotypical of race–hair straightening, light makeup, and, of course, the surgical transformations of Michael Jackson.

do it yourself Exciting news! Your boss wants some marketing materials for your company, and youve been given the responsibility of hiring and working with a graphic designer to develop them. Its a high-visibility assignment-to date, the companys materials consist solely of letterhead and business cards-and the task will be a welcome change to your usual duties. Working with a designer can be intimidating, but if youre careful in your selection of, and forthcoming in your discussions with, a graphic designer, youll have a much better chance at getting materials you really like. Furthermore, you might find a designer for a long-term business relationship.
Forgetting commercial imperatives when considering graphic design can lead to costly mistakes for business owners. Jan McPhedran has more. A common mistake is to approach the graphic design task from an artistic perspective, giving this precedence over business considerations. Business owners might feel that visual presence is one area in which to express their creativity and to some extent, they are right: a powerful graphic solution should deliver differentiation. Coming to the design table having earmarked a favourite style or ideas for imagery can be an excellent way to get the creative process underway, with one proviso: guiding thoughts need to be consistent with the business at hand, and more importantly, with its positioning within the marketplace. For example, a desire to emulate a boutique hotel brochure might be counter-productive if the product that needs selling is basic motel rooms.

If you are seeking relief for a medical condition, you probably want to find a health care professional-such as a physician, nurse, psychiatrist, psychologist or social worker-who is trained and experienced not only in hypnosis but also with your particular symptom or ailment. Always seek people who have had the maximum training possible in the area in which you are seeking help. Remember, it is your mind they will be working with. Finding a qualified hypnotherapist isnt that hard. Many health care professionals licensed in other fields practice hypnosis, so chances are good that your health care professional can give you a referral. Two major organizations that are recognized as having high professional standards are The American Society of Clinical Hypnosis (ASCH) and The Society of Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis (SCEH). Both can provide the names of qualified practitioners in your area:
